This session was a pure adventure and I feel fortunate that the Brodt Family chose me to be their Family Photographer. I had a blast documenting the essence of their connection and love for each other.
Brooke and I met last year in Spring when I wanted (needed) to just shoot for myself. I had a vision in mind and wanted to try new techniques. Brooke and I followed each other on Instagram already so I knew she was local to Fort Collins. Back then we did a Mother & Daughter session with her wonderful daughter Layla. Not only was that one of my very favorite sessions, it was also much needed for my creative heart & soul.
Fast forward to the beginning of this year Brooke asked if me to photograph her entire Family this time. Only requirement: an epic location inside a National Park. Perfection!! She decided on Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, which is in southern Colorado near Alamosa. Most of us envision a mountainous scenery when we think of Colorado but it turns out the diverse state has many beautiful faces. This Colorado National Park is known for huge dunes like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. Trails lead to forests, wetlands and alpine lakes like Medano Lake.
When we arrived at the Dunes that evening we were greeted by strong wind conditions. When I took the first frame to test the light I was immediately in love with it. These are MY conditions!!! Tons of beautiful light…wind and a sweet & loving family. It was truly a dream session from start to finish.
We didn’t get to experience the seasonal Medano Creek this year due to the little snow we had during the previous winter but the abundant sand landscape and beautiful light bouncing off of it was more than enough for our amazing Family session.
They snuggled, danced, ran and played on Nature’s playground and I happily documented what is THEM! A beautiful family full of love, laughter and happy energy.
I also believe that Mom + Dad should be photographed as a couple…just the two of them – as husband & wife. Because that is just as important to have as the whole family.
I love how the light and mood changed – every minute we got closer to sunset. The landscape of these desert dunes is simply amazing and beautiful. There was really not a bad view no matter which way we turned. The wind was intense, to the point where we could not even hear each other without yelling, but we still embraced and worked with it as part of our shoot.
On our way home from the Sand Dunes I looked back and noticed the incredible light that was left. We decided to pull over and take a few last frames to catch the last sunrays before setting. I am so glad we did as it gave the last part of this shoot a whole different look, background and feel.
Thank you Brooke & Matt for letting me be your Family Photographer and part of an epic trip at this rad location! I enjoyed every minute of it.
