Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love…like looooooove Christmas. It’s my absolute favorite holiday. There is something so cozy and comfy about it and I look forward to it all year long. It has gotten even more fun since having my own kids especially as they grow older and have gotten more aware of the meaning and traditions of Christmas. They are 8 & 5 years old and still believe in all the good magic, listen to our Santa stories with big eyes full of wonder while stuffing their faces with homemade Christmas cookies.
Gosh the memories we are creating…they are timeless and most of all priceless. Ok ok I am getting to the point I promise 😉 I guess my point is that the best memories aren’t the ones we set up to be remembered but that just happen…honest, organic, candid. Those are exactly the images I want in my photo books and filling the walls in my house. I wish a photographer could follow me around some days and just capture whatever we do. I want to be able to look back at it all with teary eyes and just remember those specific moments.
I have paired this blog post with the my favorite images from my latest In-home Lifestyle Session with the Walter Family. It was the weekend after Thanksgiving…just in time to put up the Christmas tree and decorate the house. Little Axton was less concerned about putting the decorations onto the tree and had a lot more fun just playing with it. So Mama Courtney was on tree decoration duty. Later on they read some books, snuggled in the family bed and had a fun sink bath. All beautiful moments they will cherish forever and remember as their first Christmas as a Family of 3.
This is why In-Home Lifestyle Session are pretty much some of my favorite sessions to photograph. And just in case you are not convinced yet I’ll give you 3 reason why a Lifestyle Session rocks.
This is your house – your HOME – most likely the place you brought your baby or babies home to from the hospital. It is the place all important memories of your family have happened and will continue to happen. It has your style – and trust me it does not need to be straight out of the Pottery Barn catalog – it has your smell (I mean that in a good way…like ‘this smells like home’ smell) – it is your ultimate comfort zone. Some day in 5 or 10…20 years you will look at these pictures and you will notice all the little things in your house and the memories attached to them. It’s like listening to a song that is associated with a specific memory. You go right back there the moment you hear the song again. And your kids! They will absolutely love flipping through photo books portraying their childhood at their actual home rather than some random park or natural area they most likely have no connection to. The moments captured are real…they are authentic and that makes them most precious.
Oh all the things we can do. Just think of your day-to-day activities from mundane to exciting. From making breakfast to having movie night together. From reading books together or have Family game night. The possibilities are endless and of course vary by age. A sink bath and snuggle time are beautiful with babies, reading time and playroom discovery work amazing for toddler. How about a pillow fight in Mom & Dad’s big bed? Or baking cookies with your middle schooler? See who can swing the highest on the playset in the backyard? There is so much room for spontaneity and candid moments to unfold naturally.
I do encourage activities that are authentic and true to what your Family would normally do…so if you have never baked before or are famous for burning water a Lifestyle Session might not be the time to test out these ‘skills’. 😉
After all it is a documentation of your Family, of the things you love to do together, of the things you want to look back at some day with a big smile and a happy heart.
3. INTIMACY & COMFORT
The comfort of your own home is irreplaceable. Here you can be you and so can your kids. No chaos and rushing out the door to get to the session location, worry about bathroom breaks for your toddler / possible diaper accident of your baby. No forced smiles and funny poses. Instead they get to lounge on the couch, play with their toys, read their favorite books and just be home with their family… and comfy!
In-home Lifestyle Session are also perfect for beautiful breastfeeding images, some wonderful skin-to-skin time with your new baby or a milk bath for Mama-to-be. All these in soft window light make for some gorgeous & timeless portraits.
Tell me about your favorite childhood memory you love to look back at…
